Swiss sports brand creates supply chain coalition to reshape carbon waste into running shoes. Today, the next critical step in this project has been reached: the reveal of Cloudprime.
Although there are now a number of systems that capture carbon emissions from smokestacks, many people may still wonder: What is the captured carbon used for ? Well, the Swiss company On is making shoes with that material.

On is the first company in the footwear industry to explore the use of carbon emissions as the main raw material for the midsole of a shoe.

On's ambitions are high: the sports brand born in the Swiss Alps envisions a future in which all On products are fossil-free and completely circular. CleanCloud is the result of five years of dedicated work, which began with finding the best possible partners. This collaborative approach is key to overcoming the challenges of developing this complex technology at commercial scale.
More specifically, On is using carbon-derived CleanCloud ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) foam in the midsole of its upcoming Cloudprime running shoes. Normally, that part of the shoe would be made of petro Brazil Mobile Number List leum-based foam, the production of which actually contributes to global carbon emissions.
Partnering with On are US carbon capture company LanzaTech, Austrian plastics maker Borealis and French engineering firm Technip Energies.
Production of CleanCloud foam begins with a LanzaTech system that captures carbon monoxide gas emissions from sources such as steel mills. In a patented fermentation process, “natural and specially selected bacteria” subsequently convert that gas into liquid ethanol. Technip then dehydrates that ethanol, after which Borealis polymerizes it into small plastic pellets. It then uses those granules in the production of the foam.
And while the midsole will be the only part of the shoe to incorporate carbon-captured CleanCloud foam, plans call for other components to be made from other "green" materials.
The outsole, for example, will be composed of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) that is chemically recycled from post-consumer plastic waste by California-based startup Novoloop. And if all goes as planned, the upper will be made from a carbon-derived polyester-based fabric produced by French company Fairbrics.
It is currently unknown when the Cloudprime sneakers will be commercially available or at what price.
