On International Youth Day , we have many people to congratulate. In the world there are, according to UN data, billion young people between and years old. At the current growth rate, it is believed that by the figure will reach billion. Although there is no universally accepted definition of youth, the United Nations defines youth as precisely those people between the ages of and Although it is true that in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, a boy or girl was defined as people up to years of age, it was ultimately about covering a broader range in terms of protection and rights, more even when there was no document on youth rights. However, the nuances of the term “youth” vary depending on the geographical area, and depend on sociocultural, institutional, political and economic factors. Even so, most States end this stage of life upon reaching years of age, the age at which the person is considered an adult before the law. In any case, what is clear is that this is a transcendental stage in the life of any human being. At the dawn of adulthood, we face important decisions about the person we want to become; Abstract ideas about ethics and morality begin to consolidate, and empathy gains greater weight. Furthermore, for the rest of society, youth is seen as the great hope. Today we want to reflect that youth, in the faces of Wendy and Belina , two Nicaraguan teenagers, participants in Educo projects in the rural community of Matagalpa.
At Educo we have been working in Nicaragua since We work with schools and our projects reach more than , children and young people and almost , adults. We are focused on the protection of children and the prom Chinese Overseas Asia Number Data otion of good treatment, to achieve spaces where minors fully enjoy their rights, and well-being and good living are promoted. But, in addition, we ensure the right of all boys and girls to receive a transformative, self-critical, purposeful and enabling education, which serves for the full development of personality. Transformative education that develops your personality An example of this transformative education has been reflected in the young Wendy , participant of the project "Share your talent and improve your community environment" . Through this, and with various artistic and cultural activities, the identity and personal development of adolescents who, due to different circumstances, could resort to alcohol, drugs and violence, have been strengthened. Wendy signed up for our project and learned how to make cold porcelain pieces. She did it to be able to start a business and, through this knowledge, generate income and help her parents. Also for the studies that she will start next year, because Wendy wants to be a doctor.
After her participation in the project, she and other young people in the community organized themselves and began to sell cold porcelain paintings, mugs, keychains and other pieces that community customers were interested in. They even sent orders to Managua, the capital. At Educo we are happy with the positive impact of the project that, despite concluding at the end of , has continued rolling and is totally sustainable. It is because Wendy, like so many others, continues with the business and generates her own income. Now she is able to transfer her knowledge to other young people. “Our duty is to teach people who do not have access to education ,” she says. And Wendy has empathy to the surface, which is why she wants to study Medicine. Furthermore, because “it is necessary that there be a doctor in the area and not have to travel to the city to receive medical care.” The young woman does not forget the number of situations she has seen and experienced since she was a child, and she is committed to initiating a change in her environment. She is clear: “I want to study medicine because I know that I will be able to help many in my community. All young people can do it, that's why I tell them to continue studying so that they can make their future themselves,” she tells us.
